more gifts...

I threw together some zippered pouches and a few earrings for some christmas gifts. I don't think that the people receiving these gifts check this blog, so it should be safe. If not, Merry Christmas early (sorta)! Forgive the poor pictures - I snapped them quickly on my kitchen counter.

teacher gifts...

This is what I made for a teacher gift. Isn't it such a cute idea! I wish I could claim it as my own, but I stole it from here. Now, only a few more things to make (and I still have to finish those darn ornaments!).

bead star 2008...

So the time has come for me to announce that I got an Honorable Mention in the Crystals category in the Bead Star 2008 competition. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. You can see the necklace and the instructions in the inaugural Bead Star issue available on Monday. My necklace is an auction item to benefit the American Heart Association and will most likely be auctioned off on ebay in March.

The following is the press release and winners in all the categories.

Bead Star Announces 2008 Winning Jewelry Designs and Publication of Debut Issue
Loveland, Colo., December 9, 2008:

Bead Star magazine announced today the 45 prize-winning jewelry designers in the inaugural Bead Star challenge—an exciting competition that garnered more than 1,000 entries worldwide and was voted on by nearly 10,000 members of the Beading Daily community. The designs are published in Bead Star 2008, the first-ever beading publication composed entirely of prize-winning designs, on newsstands nationwide Monday, December 15. In making the announcement, editor Danielle Fox said, "While on the outside Bead Star may look like any other magazine, it's really an event—an awards ceremony if you will…. imagine resounding applause, cameras flashing, and jewels sparkling as you flip through the pages of this star-studded publication."

The Grand Prize Bead Star winner is Valerie Aharoni, whose project is featured on the cover of the magazine. Aharoni's first-place project in the Seed Beads category was chosen by Grand Prize Sponsor Fire Mountain Gems and Beads among the nine first-place category winners. In winning, Aharoni receives an all-expense-paid trip for two to Bead Fest Santa Fe, March 12-15, 2009, courtesy of grand-prize sponsor, Fire Mountain Gems and Beads, plus a $1,500 gift certificate from Fire Mountain Gems and Beads to be awarded at Bead Fest. This prize is on top of her $1,000 gift certificate from Miyuki for first-place in the Seed Beads category. For Aharoni, an artist from Brooklyn, New York, this win represents a series of exciting firsts: the first time she's created a nonbeadweaving seed-bead project, the first time she's entered a beading contest, the first time she's won any contest at all, the first time she'll travel to Santa Fe, and the first time she'll attend a bead show."The contest was totally no-stress," says Aharoni. "There were no entry fees and the guidelines were clear. Bead Star made it easy for beginners like me who have never entered a contest before."

Winners Selected by the People for the People

The Bead Star contest kicked off back in April 2008 with a call for designs made with simple stringing, crimping, and wireworking techniques. The Bead Star editorial offices received more than 1,000 unique entries, which the editors of Stringing and Beadwork magazines culled down to 180 finalists—20 per category. From there, nearly 10,000 Beading Daily members voted on their favorites in each category, which ultimately made it into this all-star publication. A first-place, second-place, and third-place winner and two honorable mentions were awarded in each of nine design element categories: Crystals, Seed Beads, Glass, Pearls, Stones, Metals, Plastics, Designs Under $25, and Designs with a Heart. All first place prizes are valued at $1,000, second place prizes are valued at $500, and third place prizes are valued at $250. All honorable mentions were sponsored by Interweave and winners received a complimentary one-year subscription to an Interweave jewelry magazine of their choice—Beadwork, Jewelry Artist, Step by Step Beads, Step by Step Wire Jewelry, or Stringing.Information and contest rules for next year's Bead Star 2009 contest will be posted on the magazine's website, BeadStar.com, on December 16.

Auction Items

Jewelry pieces marked "Auction Item" in the magazine have been donated by their designers to auctions in March 2009 to benefit the American Heart Association's women's heart-health initiatives. All auction items will be on display at Bead Fest Santa Fe, March 12-15, 2009. Interweave will host a silent auction for five of the pieces live at the event on March 14 and 15, while the rest of the jewelry will be auctioned on eBay from March 6-16. Look for the symbols "Auction Item – ebay" and "Auction Item – Bead Fest" throughout the magazine to see which pieces can be bid on to benefit this worthy cause.

Congratulations to the Bead Star 2008 Winners:
Best in Show: Valerie Aharoni, for her seed-bead necklace "Gild & reGild," sponsored by Fire Mountain Gems and Beads (Prize valued at $5,000)

ornament party...

Here is a sneak peek of the ornaments I am making for an ornament exchange. This one isn't quite done - I am going to paint and glitter the back and I need to glue a ribbon on it to hang.
Each of the ornaments will be with different papers/colors. Cute huh!

christmas project...

I made this centerpiece for our table at our ward christmas party. My mother-in-law had a picture of a similar tree in one of her cookbooks - only it was made with powdered sugar donut holes, cranberries, and mint leaves. I decided I didn't want to do something so perishable, so I used cotton balls and fake berries/leaves. I also had plans to make some fake snowballs using glass ornaments and flocking spray - but they did not turn out. I think the centerpiece still looks great!

a long time ago...

I meant to post a picture of the banner I made for my Petite Pieces booth set up for craft shows. I don't mean to brag, but it is AWESOME if I do say so myself. I don't think you can tell from the pictures, but the sign is very glittery too.

Everything in my shop is going to the craft fair "Christmas in July" in Cedar City, Utah. Each year the Shakespeare Guild puts on this fair (faire?). It is located outside the Randall L. Jones Theatre, and runs from 10am to 6 pm on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th. My sister and I will be sharing a booth with our original jewelry and her interchangeable watches. Stop by and visit! Mention the blog, and I will give you $5 bucks off your total purchase! While you're there, see a play.....

I am going to Christmas in July in Cedar City the end of the month. Since I will be having specials at the fair, and I really hope to sell quite a bit of my inventory, I am giving you all the opportunity to get the item you've been always wanting before it's gone!

Until July 24th, if you purchase a bracelet or necklace, you get a free pair of earrings! This does not apply to the clearance items, or the red velvet bracelet in my store.

latest sewing projects...

I've been in a sewing mood lately.

I just finished Lily's outfit for her 1 year old pictures. I've been dying since before I even had a girl to make tutus. I don't know why. I think they are the most adorable things on little girls. I sort of copied this idea from one that I have seen at an online store that is WAY super expensive but I think mine turned out WAY cuter. I will post pictures on my family blog of her wearing it when I get the pictures done.

Zane has been asking me for this fabric he saw at Joann's and I just couldn't get it for him, because I had NO idea what I would make out of it. I finally figured out I could make him a scripture bag. He LOVES it. I put a pocket on the front (not shown) for him to put a car in, and there is a pocket inside for crayons, pencils, etc.

5.15.2008

new bracelets...

I'm going to be making and listing some new stuff in the next coming weeks...

4.24.2008

beadstar...

I'm working on some entries for a beading contest. I'm entering 3 new and original pieces. The grand prize is an all expense paid trip to Bead Expo in Santa Fe, NM next year plus a $1500 shopping spree. The finalists will be posted on their website, where you can go to vote for your favorite (a la American Idol). I have no grand ideas, but I will let you know if anything comes of it!
Also, I will post pictures of what I'm entering once I find out if that is ok or not...

4.21.2008

bridal jewelry...

I made some jewelry for a wedding this weekend. The bride wanted a simple one strand "invisible" type necklace with clear swarovski crystals. I also made her a matching two strand bracelet (she doesn't know she is getting the bracelet I don't think). The pictures are magnified, really the crystals in the bride's necklace are only 4mm. It will look like there are little sparkling jewels on her neck, so pretty.

The little girls in the wedding party have red siam swarovski crystals and white freshwater pearl bracelets and necklaces. It was so fun to make such tiny baby bracelets too! Why haven't I made one of these for my baby?! I am going to list the photo of the baby bracelets on my etsy store and offer them as a custom item (you pick the color of crystal) for $8 baby up to toddler size. $10 for a preschooler and up size. What do you think?

4.15.2008

shhhh it's a secret...

I have just come up with a fabulous unique idea for jewelry...and I'm bursting to tell, but I'm not going to. It's great. I really hope that I can make it work. Stay tuned...

4.14.2008

my latest projects...

I just finished sewing together a top of a quilt for my grandma. She did some cute embroidered/cross stitched squares that I pieced together by machine with some cute polka dot fabric. I did not take a picture, because it will be a gift for someone eventually, and it should remain a surprise! But it turned out very cute!

Since I finished that I decided to work on a couple pieces of jewelry. Did these two necklaces today, that will go on etsy tomorrow.
